How to Choose Wallpaper for a Bathroom

How to Choose Wallpaper for a Bathroom

Where paper can and cannot go in a bathroom, which of our three papers to use, and the one thing that decides whether it stays up

Yes, in most bathrooms. Use our heavy-grade paper, keep it out of direct spray, and make sure the room is properly ventilated. Our traditional paper can be used in a well-ventilated bathroom. Our removable peel and stick paper is not suitable for bathrooms, because steam is exactly what defeats a pressure-sensitive adhesive.

Ventilation decides everything

Wallpaper does not fail in bathrooms because of water. It fails because of steam that has nowhere to go, condensing on cool walls and working its way behind the edges.

  • Run an extractor during a shower and for fifteen to twenty minutes afterwards.
  • Open a window if there is no extractor.
  • Keep the door shut while the room is in use and the extractor running, so moisture goes out rather than into the landing.
  • Deal with any existing condensation or mould problem before you paper. Wallpaper hides it briefly and makes it worse.

A bathroom with good ventilation takes wallpaper happily. One where the mirror stays fogged for an hour will defeat any paper made.

Where paper can and cannot go

  • Yes: the wall opposite the bath, behind a freestanding bath, above a half-tiled wall, around a window, behind a WC, and the whole of a cloakroom.
  • No: inside a shower enclosure, on the wall directly behind a bath's taps, or as a splashback behind a basin.

The rule is simple: wherever water lands directly, use tile, glass or panelling. Everywhere else, paper is fine.

Heavy-grade, 300gsm: recommended

Vinyl-coated non-woven, so it copes with an occasionally humid room and can be gently cleaned. The sand texture and matte finish also disguise the small imperfections common on bathroom walls.

Traditional, 150gsm: usable

Fine in a well-ventilated bathroom, particularly a cloakroom or a family bathroom with a good extractor. Keep it further from the wet areas than you would the heavy-grade.

Removable, 180gsm: not suitable

Its adhesive relies on contact with the paint film, and repeated steam works between the two. It will lift at the edges within weeks.

The downstairs cloakroom

The easiest and most rewarding room in the house to paper. It is small, so the roll count is low. It is dry, because nobody showers in it. And because it is a room people spend only a minute in, it can carry a bolder design than you would live with in a living room.

Two or three rolls typically does an entire cloakroom. It is the room to be brave in.

Hanging it well

  1. Prepare thoroughly, because bathroom walls carry more residue than they look. Wash, rinse, dry, dust.
  2. Check for damp and condensation staining before you start.
  3. Paste generously and take the adhesive right into the corners and edges, where steam finds its way in.
  4. Trim neatly to tiles, splashbacks and around the WC cistern. Crease first, then cut against a broad knife.
  5. Let it dry for a full 48 hours before anyone showers in the room, with the extractor running.

Papering above a half-tiled wall

A common and sensible arrangement: tile stays where the water is, paper goes above. Trim the paper down onto the top edge of the tile or its trim, creasing first. It is the same technique as trimming onto a dado rail.

Do not paper over the tiles themselves.

Can you wallpaper a bathroom?

Yes, in a properly ventilated bathroom, keeping the paper out of direct spray. Heavy-grade is the paper we recommend.

Can you use peel and stick wallpaper in a bathroom?

We do not recommend it. Steam gets between the adhesive and the paint film and the edges lift.

Can wallpaper go in a shower?

No. Inside an enclosure needs tile, glass or panelling.

Will bathroom wallpaper peel?

Not if the room is ventilated, the wall was properly prepared and the paper was allowed to dry fully before the room was used.

Is your wallpaper waterproof?

No. The heavy-grade paper is vinyl-coated and tolerates humidity and gentle cleaning; none of our papers is waterproof.

What about a downstairs cloakroom?

The best room in the house for it: small, dry, and the right place for a bold design.

It’s only a little room, my sons office but it’s really brightened it up.

Poor customer service - rolls are only available as one off 10m runs, so if you need 11m.. unfortunately you’ll be paying double for a second roll! Unless your walls are 8m or less, I’d avoid. Wrongly assumed Claret & Key would be slightly more compassionate about the situation and even help with a slightly discounted second roll, considering we only needed 1m. How wrong we were!

Etta

Store owner replied: Hi Emily, I'm sorry to hear that you are disappointed with the service. We sell our wallpaper by the roll, and we are unable to manufacture shorter rolls. This will be the same for most manufacturers as 10m rolls are standard, and most rooms require more than 1 roll to complete the job. Thanks, Claret & Key

I really loved this paper and thought it would look nice in my attic space. Delighted with the end result. Great service, excellent quality of paper and it really transforms the room. The eves are very low so the space was not utilised so making a feature with the wallpaper has created a cosy space to relax in. Thank you. M

Love this wallpaper. It’s just enough to show a statement but not so loud that it overpowers the space. Being able to pick the color is such a great thing also. You’re not stuck with 5 options so it can match your style and colors of your space. Would recommend to anyone looking for wallpaper. Very happy and my installer said its super easy to install this pattern.

I love how everything turned out and the price point was great. It was a bit challenging to piece together. Being from the USA, it was kind of a challenge to convert all the measurements to figure out how many rolls I needed and then where to cut the rolls to line up the images based on the design repetition. Luckily, I had plenty of wallpaper to work with on the roll.

Customer photo review of Adele

Gorgeous wallpaper, but the measuring option on the website left us short by 1 roll. Had to order another one but when it came the colour match was perfect. Thankfully I wasn’t paying for a decorator, otherwise would have been disappointed in having to pay for them to return. Otherwise great quality wallpaper and design compared to other similar products available.

Customer photo review of Stella

Lovely pattern and paper quality. However, I wish that I had paid more attention to the roll width measurement. For some strange reason your paper is narrower than a standard roll. This caused me a great deal of problems when papering my lobby, a small area but that made it more difficult because I was left with a narrow space to fill on 3 walls with a very long drop. Although I love the paper I probably wouldn't use it again just for this reason. Why you would produce paper not of a standard width is for you to know and me to wonder but it has made my small project very difficult.

Customer photo review of Ackley

Used this paper to make a dark study cosier. Absolutely loved the colour - the background is a perfect match to our existing panelling painted in Farrow and Ball Old White. First time using paste the wall and it was a revelation so easy and much less mess. Quality of the paper is great but noted the rolls are slightly narrower than most wallpapers. Loved the pattern match which meant little waste what we had left we used to recover some old box files which was easy. I thoroughly recommend.
