How to Choose Wallpaper for a Hallway or High-Traffic Space

How to Choose Wallpaper for a Hallway or High-Traffic Space

Why a hallway needs the heaviest paper, where the wear actually happens, and the case for going darker rather than paler in a space with no daylight

Use our heavy-grade 300gsm paper. A hallway takes more physical wear than any other room in the house: bags, coats, shoulders, prams, dogs, bicycles. It is also the space you least want to redo, because doing it properly means working over a stairwell.

Why heavy-grade

  • Twice the weight of a standard paper, so it resists knocks and scuffing.
  • Vinyl-coated, so marks at hand and shoulder height can be blotted off.
  • A fine sand texture, which disguises the small imperfections common on old hallway walls far better than a flat finish.

Our traditional paper is perfectly usable in a quiet hall in a household of two. In a family house with a front door that opens forty times a day, the heavier paper is the one that still looks well in five years.

Halls are darker than you think, and that is an opportunity

Most hallways have no window at all, or one small one, and are lit almost entirely by artificial light and by whatever spills in from adjoining rooms.

The instinct is to go pale to make it feel bigger. It rarely works: a pale colour with no daylight on it reads grey and flat, and the hall ends up feeling like a corridor.

The better approach in a windowless hall is to accept the darkness and use it: a deeper colourway, a richer ground, something that makes the hall feel deliberate and makes the rooms off it feel bright by contrast. Because every design can be recoloured, this is a decision you can actually make rather than one you have to find on a shelf.

Plan the quantity carefully

A hall, stairs and landing is three spaces with different heights, and the stairwell drops are long, often four metres or more. A 4.2m drop yields only two lengths from a roll, against three from a standard 2.4m wall.

Measure the hall, the stairwell and the landing as separate calculations and add them together. Averaging the height is the classic way to end up a roll short, and a roll short on a stairwell means getting the platform out again.

Where the wear happens

  • Beside the front door, where coats and bags brush past.
  • The wall along the stairs at hand height, which is touched constantly.
  • The corner at the bottom of the stairs, which everything is carried around.
  • Behind the radiator, where most halls have one.
  • The understairs cupboard door, worth papering to make it disappear.

Panelling to dado height with paper above solves the worst of it: the wear zone becomes paintable timber and the paper sits above shoulder height. It also halves the roll count.

Scale in a narrow space

You never see a hallway wall from more than a metre or two away, so a large-scale design is read close up and in fragments rather than as a whole. That can be beautiful, an enveloping and immersive effect, or it can feel crowded.

Hold an A3 sample against the wall and look at it from where you actually stand: at the front door, at the bottom of the stairs, from the landing. That is the view the design has to work in.

What is the best wallpaper for a hallway?

Our heavy-grade 300gsm paper: hardwearing, vinyl-coated and textured enough to disguise an imperfect wall.

Should a dark hallway have pale wallpaper?

Not necessarily. Pale colours without daylight read grey. A deeper colourway often makes a windowless hall feel considered rather than gloomy.

How many rolls do I need for a hall, stairs and landing?

Measure the three areas separately, because stairwell drops use paper roughly a third faster than standard walls.

Can I wallpaper just the stairwell?

Yes, and it is a common approach: the stairwell papered, the hall and landing painted in a colour drawn from the design.

Is peel and stick suitable for a hallway?

For light use on a smooth painted wall, yes. In a busy family hall, the pasted papers will wear far better.

Should I hire a decorator?

For the stairwell, often yes. It is the one job where the risk is the access rather than the paper.

Poor customer service - rolls are only available as one off 10m runs, so if you need 11m.. unfortunately you’ll be paying double for a second roll! Unless your walls are 8m or less, I’d avoid. Wrongly assumed Claret & Key would be slightly more compassionate about the situation and even help with a slightly discounted second roll, considering we only needed 1m. How wrong we were!

Etta

Store owner replied: Hi Emily, I'm sorry to hear that you are disappointed with the service. We sell our wallpaper by the roll, and we are unable to manufacture shorter rolls. This will be the same for most manufacturers as 10m rolls are standard, and most rooms require more than 1 roll to complete the job. Thanks, Claret & Key

I really loved this paper and thought it would look nice in my attic space. Delighted with the end result. Great service, excellent quality of paper and it really transforms the room. The eves are very low so the space was not utilised so making a feature with the wallpaper has created a cosy space to relax in. Thank you. M

Love this wallpaper. It’s just enough to show a statement but not so loud that it overpowers the space. Being able to pick the color is such a great thing also. You’re not stuck with 5 options so it can match your style and colors of your space. Would recommend to anyone looking for wallpaper. Very happy and my installer said its super easy to install this pattern.

I love how everything turned out and the price point was great. It was a bit challenging to piece together. Being from the USA, it was kind of a challenge to convert all the measurements to figure out how many rolls I needed and then where to cut the rolls to line up the images based on the design repetition. Luckily, I had plenty of wallpaper to work with on the roll.

Customer photo review of Adele

Gorgeous wallpaper, but the measuring option on the website left us short by 1 roll. Had to order another one but when it came the colour match was perfect. Thankfully I wasn’t paying for a decorator, otherwise would have been disappointed in having to pay for them to return. Otherwise great quality wallpaper and design compared to other similar products available.

Customer photo review of Stella

Lovely pattern and paper quality. However, I wish that I had paid more attention to the roll width measurement. For some strange reason your paper is narrower than a standard roll. This caused me a great deal of problems when papering my lobby, a small area but that made it more difficult because I was left with a narrow space to fill on 3 walls with a very long drop. Although I love the paper I probably wouldn't use it again just for this reason. Why you would produce paper not of a standard width is for you to know and me to wonder but it has made my small project very difficult.

Customer photo review of Ackley

Used this paper to make a dark study cosier. Absolutely loved the colour - the background is a perfect match to our existing panelling painted in Farrow and Ball Old White. First time using paste the wall and it was a revelation so easy and much less mess. Quality of the paper is great but noted the rolls are slightly narrower than most wallpapers. Loved the pattern match which meant little waste what we had left we used to recover some old box files which was easy. I thoroughly recommend.
